User Account & Lab Info
The GIS Lab is located at room 8-125 in the Teaching Lab
Building. The lab is open to university wide to provide support
and services for teaching and research activities. In order
to use the lab facility, you need an user account for accessing GIS Lab file server and terminal servers.

1. User Account & Lab environment
- Before applying an user account in the GIS Lab, you need
a UNBC user account set up by CTS (Computing and Telecommunications
Services). To get a UNBC account, go to the CTS help desk
located the north end of the second floor in the Teaching Lab building.
- If you do have an UNBC account but do not remember your account
information, check it out at http://www.userdb.unbc.ca
- Take your UNBC account information to GIS Lab and talk
to a Senior Lab Instructor (Ping or Scott). The lab instructor
will set up an account for you for accessing GIS facility.

Note:
User account should be done in the first week of
each semester if you are taking GIS related courses. Labs start in the second week in general.
2. Lab Protocol
- No food, drinks, or eating and no sound systems or radios beyond the lab entrance.
- YOU MUST consult a lab instructor before switching on
or off a computer.
- Do not touch the computer screen. Use your mouse pointer
to point things out to other people.
- Do not sprint through the lab assignments looking only
for the commands. If you finish the first few labs too quickly,
you will pay for it in later labs.
3. Lab Schedule
The GIS LAB is open from 8:30am to
4:30pm, Monday - Friday. The lab schedule is posted
on the board outside of the GIS Lab and also on our website: http://www.gis.unbc.ca/lab_schedule.php. Time slots that are not occupied by courses open
to everybody.
4. Lab periods
You should stay in your assigned lab period. However if you
must switch for a week talk to you lab instructor.
5. Starting a Lab
- We have dual booting system (Linux & WindowXP) for
each lab machine, the default operating system is Ubuntu Linux.
You will see the Ubuntu Login window by default.
- To login Ubuntu Linux, simply enter your login name and
password. If you want to use local windowXP system, you
need to reboot computer and choose WindowXP to boot up to windows.

- Course materials including the lecture notes, lab manual,
help and a lot of resources related to GIS and Remote Sensing
are available on our GIS Website at www.gis.unbc.ca
. Use web browser (Internet Explorer / Netscape/ Mozillar) to access
GIS Website.
6. End Lab
When you finish your work in the lab time, please close all windows (programs)
and logout properly. Check Starting
